Withstane OR Withstain

Yes, this was an actual search I did today. The goal was to find out which was the correct spelling. What I found however, was that I’ve been using a made up word for 29 years and nobody mentioned it. After the denial phase, came the embarrassment… then I was reminded of this video, and I suddenly felt much better. Thanks Pres!

Also, if you’re a fan of made up words, check out this twitter account documenting the vocabulary of one of my coworkers: @vantionary

How to use “Selective Tweets”

I recently joined the world of Twitter, because I want to be more hip. I also wanted to learn how to post my tweets to Facebook, but only some of them, so I googled “How to update your status using selective tweets.”

This was pretty helpful:

Holes in Aluminum Foil

Reason for Search:

We’ve had a pan of my mother-in-law’s famous southern cornbread sitting out on the counter for a couple of days covered in aluminum foil. When I pulled the foil back to cut a slice, I noticed that there were disgusting little holes in the foil as if bugs had eaten through it. I wish I had a picture to post here, but my wife threw it away before I had a chance to find out that it wasn’t as gross as we’d thought.

Conclusions:

I was pretty surprised to discover the cause of this phenomenon. I would have guessed roaches, metal-munching bacteria, manufacturing defect… but not that our cornbread had magically turned into a battery. Apparently, this is known as the “Lasagna Cell” effect, and it happens when you put a salty wet food (This ain’t your average cornbread. Think cheese log with cornmeal.) into a steel pan and cover it with foil. It becomes a recipe for electricity as much as it is for Coronary heart disease. Now anywhere the food touches the foil, it creates a short in the battery and corrodes a tiny bug-like hole.

Does Newt Gingrich look like Ted Kennedy?

For reference:

Reason for Search:

I’ve always wondered if other humans drew the connection that I did.

Conclusions:

In my mind, they are evil but opposite twins of each other.  They both are pretty extreme for their party (yes, I know Ted is dead, but I don’t know which verbs to use) and they have the same hair and also they both have shady pasts.

Crepe Sole

Reason for Search:

One of my Christmas presents this year was a pair of Clarks Desert Boots. The rubber on the bottom seemed strange and the tag said “Crepe Sole.” So I searched.

Conclusions:

Crepe rubber is a crude form of rubber that can be cheaply manufactured into sheets (hence no tread). It is also a natural rubber, meaning that it is made primarily from a milky latex substance produced by rubber trees.

Opinions seem to be that they are not as durable as synthetic rubber soles but that they are more comfortable. Added bonus, they don’t track mud because they don’t have tread.

What Does SNS Mean?

Reason for Search:

My brother-in-law Tripp Crosby created a video called Sh*t Nobody Says. It went viral, so he started a twitter account and started hash tagging stuff as #sns. Other people using that hash tag were not talking about his video, so I wanted to find out what it actually stood for.

Conclusions:

SNS means “Social Networking Service”

Test Credit Card Numbers

Reason for Search:

I downloaded a new iPhone game called Card Ace: Casino last night. They give you $10,000 in fake chips to start off with, but it didn’t take me all of 20 minutes to squander it away, and I found myself jumping through hoops trying to score some more cash. The game offers some ways to earn a little money by signing up for various free online offers, but again, it didn’t take me long to lose it all.

One of the ways you could earn a ton of chips was to sign up for a subscription to People magazine. Having done a little work on an online store in the past, I remembered that there are certain fake credit card numbers that can be used by site developers to test the credit card transaction process. It seemed perhaps a little unethical, but since this was just to earn fake money in a game, I figured I’d give it a shot. To be clear, I wasn’t trying to actually order a subscription. I was just trying to trigger the event that would tell the game I deserved some free chips.

Conclusions:

  1. I should never ACTUALLY gamble.
  2. These numbers only work for testing and fail if you try to actually complete a transaction with them. I feel kind of dumb thinking it would work, but judging by the hundreds of comments I found where people were trying to literally purchase things online and have them delivered to their house, I felt like I was in good company.
